Set of 4 PJ-SI-25-E Dining Chairs

A rare and well-documented set of four upholstered dining chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret for the Chandigarh project in India, produced circa 1958–59.

Known as the “Upholstered Dining Chair”, each chair is crafted in solid teak and features a rectilinear upholstered seat and backrest connected by two solid vertical supports. These elements are encased and secured within a teak frame, exemplifying Jeanneret’s rational, durable approach to furniture designed for institutional use.

The chairs rest on distinctive “compass” type double side legs, a hallmark of Jeanneret’s Chandigarh designs, joined by two upper crosspieces that provide both visual balance and structural stability. The black faux leather upholstery offers a restrained, graphic contrast to the warm, time-earned patina of the teak.

Each chair retains its original stencilled provenance markings, reading “Zoology / CH-81, 83, 84 and 90”, indicating their original use within the Zoology Department in Chandigarh. Such departmental inventory markings are consistent with documented administrative systems of the period and serve as strong evidence of authenticity and original institutional use.
