Description

A substantial library table designed by Pierre Jeanneret, designed for institutional use in Chandigarh during the post-independence modernist period.

Defined by its generous proportions and restrained architectural geometry, the table combines a thick, removable teak-veneered top with a solid teak base formed by two intersecting, angled leg assemblies. The construction is both practical and sculptural, reflecting the directness and material honesty characteristic of Jeanneret’s furniture for Chandigarh’s public institutions.

The table was produced in varying sizes to accommodate different working environments, from libraries to administrative spaces. Its distinctive construction, with the angled supports slotting beneath iron blocks fixed to the underside of the top, demonstrates a considered approach to assembly and structural simplicity.

Retaining its original institutional character, the table bears the markings associated with its Chandigarh history, connecting it to the working life of the city’s early modernist architecture.
