DESCRIPTION

A rare and exceptionally cohesive set of six PJ-SI-34-A stools, designed by Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh circa 1955–1956. All six originate from the same institutional building of the Postgraduate Institute (PGI) in Chandigarh, offering an unusually strong sense of provenance and continuity rather than a group assembled from different sources.

Executed in solid teak with gently curved, slightly concave caned seats, the stools exemplify Jeanneret's characteristically restrained approach to Chandigarh furniture, with an emphasis on proportion, material and construction. The angled legs and horizontal stretchers give the stools their distinctive architectural character, while the deeply aged teak has developed a rich, natural patina consistent with its age.

The cane seats have been newly woven, providing a crisp contrast to the beautifully aged timber. Each stool retains its original character and period markings, including the P.G.I./ST stencilling to the front of the seats.

Offered as a complete set of six, these stools form a particularly strong group and can be used individually or collectively as occasional seating.
