Description

Beloved of architects and interior designers, the square-shaped seat and rounded back have made this contemporary, Nakashima-inspired grass-woven chair a celebrated homage to mid-century design.

Whilst authentic Nakashima furniture is produced at the company's foundation in the USA, this modern production draws inspiration from Nakashima’s influential style and craftsmanship.

George Nakashima first visited India in 1936, spending about a year working as an architect for Czech modernist Antonin Raymond on a project for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. There, he was introduced to traditional woodworking techniques and spiritual philosophies that would deeply shape his later work.

While in India, Nakashima began experimenting with furniture design, creating simple, functional pieces from local materials. His grass-seated chair, with its handwoven natural fiber seat and wooden frame, became an enduring influence.

Our modern interpretation honours that legacy, featuring a walnut frame with finely executed joinery inspired by traditional Indian craftsmanship. The handwoven grass seat nods to the chair’s historical origins while providing comfortable, flexible support. Over time, both the wood and woven fibers will develop a warm patina that enriches its character.
