Pair of Monoxyl Teak Lounge Chairs by Jérôme Abel Seguin, circa 1990
Two sculptural low chairs carved from solid teak by Jérôme Abel Seguin, executed circa 1990. Each seat is monoxyl, shaped from a single block of wood, preserving the integrity, density and expressive grain of the material.
The silhouettes are organic and instinctive. Broad, gently reclining backs rise directly from thick, hand-carved seats, their contours left intentionally irregular. Natural fissures, knots and tool marks remain visible, reinforcing the raw authenticity of the work. One example features a carved aperture to the backrest, introducing a subtle interplay between weight and negative space.
Supported by simple cylindrical legs, the chairs balance primitive presence with quiet architectural clarity. The teak has developed a rich, warm patina over time, enhancing the tonal depth and tactile surface.
Jérôme Abel Seguin is internationally recognised for pioneering a “natural and contemporary” aesthetic, transforming rare woods into emotionally resonant functional sculpture. These chairs reflect that philosophy, grounded, elemental and timeless.
