Description

A rare set of three Pierre Jeanneret PJ-SI-22-A stools, designed for Chandigarh and dating to circa 1965–66. Characteristic of Jeanneret’s later institutional furniture, each stool features a round, slightly concave seat carved from solid teak, supported by three splayed and tapered teak legs.

The legs are connected by a circular crosspiece in grey-lacquered iron, creating a strong graphic and architectural element while providing structural stability. The restrained combination of solid teak and iron reflects Jeanneret’s pragmatic approach to furniture designed for Chandigarh’s public and institutional buildings.

The stools retain their original institutional markings, identifying them as having been used in the Physics Laboratory of Panjab University and the Scientific Block, Chandigarh. Their original markings provide an important connection to the furniture’s institutional history and intended use.

Presented together as a set of three, the stools have developed individual variations in colour, grain and patina through decades of use, giving each example its own character while maintaining a remarkably cohesive appearance as a group.
