Description
An authentic Pierre Jeanneret PJ-SI-33-C bench, designed for the Chandigarh project in India during the 1950s.
Constructed in solid teak, the bench features a rectangular seat incorporating three inset woven metal-mesh panels. The frame rests on distinctive angled A-frame legs, whose sculptural geometry gives the piece its characteristic architectural silhouette.
The teak retains its original, weathered character, with a rich patina, pronounced grain, and visible signs of age and use. Original institutional markings remain on the frame, offering a tangible connection to the bench’s working history in Chandigarh. The woven metal-mesh panels have been renewed.
Combining robust construction with a restrained architectural form, the bench exemplifies Jeanneret’s approach to functional furniture for Chandigarh’s public buildings, where material, structure and proportion define the design.
